[challenge]

With Literacity, a reading game for kids with dyslexia, we tackled the challenge of creating an engaging educational tool with specific learning needs. Our aim was to enhance reading and speaking skills while boosting confidence, transforming learning from a potential source of frustration into a fun and playful journey.

[solution]

We worked with Harlem CoLab to combined innovative game design with insights from teachers and dyslexia researchers in order to make sure the game was effective as an educational tool. We developed a narrative and gameplay structure that would resonate with the classrooms in NYC the game would be piloted in, as well as an AI powered text to speech element that could detect correctly read words real time.

Process & development

We primarily focused on the gameplay system of a speech-to-text game called Story Showdown, meant to be one of the more difficult minigames within the program. The unique challenge was getting the game to give real time feedback as a way to improve reading, and give rewards for reading correctly without making players feel overwhelmed. We iterated upon wireframed prototypes as well as consulted on the structure and level progression of the game.
